William “Bill” Maher is the host of the very popular talk show Real Time with Bill Maher. In addition, he’s also a comedian, writer, producer, political commentator, actor, and a media critic. He was also the former host of the TV program called Political Incorrect. Moreover, he is part of the board of PETA and Project Reason.
MAHER’S ORIGINS AND PERSONAL LIFE
Maher was the son of a new editor and radio announcer, William Aloysius Maher, Jr. and Julie Maher, a nurse. He was born in New York City but grew up in River Vale, New Jersey. There, he went to Pascack Hills High School in Montvale before enrolling at Cornell University where he would earn a degree in English and history.
Maher dated the former Playboy Cyber Girl Coco Johnsen who filed a case against him after their breakup. Afterwards, he formed a relationship with Karrine Steffans, an author and a former hip hop model and from 2009 to 2011, Maher dated the neuroscientist and co-host of Skeptics’ Guide to the Universe, Cara Santa Maria.
Maher’s first jobs were as a stand-up comedian and actor. In 1979, he hosted the New York City comedy club, Catch a Rising Star. He also made some brief appearances on the Johnny Carson’s and David Letterman Show, Murder She Wrote, Max Headroom, and Charlie Hoover. Moreover, he had roles in some films like Ratboy, Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death, and Pizza Man.
Maher’s hosting stint started with Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher which was aired by Comedy Central and later on by ABC. The main focus of the show were various topics that were tackled by four guests that came from different sectors. The show earned a number of awards like the Emmy Award for Outstanding Technical Direction, the CableACE Awards for Best Talk Show Series, and a Genesis Award for Best Television Talk Show. Maher himself was nominated by various awarding bodies.
In 2003, Maher began hosting and producing Real Time with Bill Maher. The format of the show was very alike to his previous one. Like Politically Incorrect, Real Time with Bill Maher had also been nominated for various awards like the Primetime Emmy’s and the Writer’s Guild awards.
Aside from being the host of his own shows, Maher made guest appearances on shows aired by different networks like The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer, Hardball with Chris Matthews, The Rachel Maddow Show, and Countdown with Keith Olbermann.
